Humphrey fellow 2011, Graciela Guzmán presents her experience in the School of Public Affairs of the University of Minnesota. Graciela is a leader that advocates for equal opportunities and access to higher education and professional development for students in Argentina. During her year in the Humphrey Program, Ms. Guzmán was able to explore new paths for increasing resources for students with high potential that come from low economic backgrounds. She was also touched by the tradition of giving and volunteering that is so common in the U.S. but not quite developed in Argentina. Among other projects that she is currently envisioning for Argentina, Graciela expects to be able to inspire in her country nationals the need to work for others. Check this video to get to know Graciela and her experience with the Humphrey Program.
Starting on January 7th, the selected participants from Argentina, and an equivalent number of students from Chile and Uruguay will attend this 5 week seminar to be hosted by Wheelock College in Boston.
During four weeks, the students will be exposed to strategies implemented by the United States to protect freedom, create justice and ensure equality. Through seminar discussions, readings, presentations, and lectures, they will also learn about empowerment models for civic engagement, leadership development and community service from a cross-cultural perspective. The last part of the program will consist of a study tour to New York and a final conference in Washington D.C. where the students will meet with equally talented peers from Bolivia, Brazil, Paraguay and Peru who participated in similar seminars at George Mason and North Carolina Central Universities.

With the support of the Fulbright Specialist Program, Assistant Professor from the University of New Mexico, Marcy Litvak visited Argentina last July with a project aimed to update Argentinean agricultural and environmental researchers’ in “tower” (gas flux) approaches to assess ecosystem functioning and regional water and carbon cycles.
During her stay in Argentina, Professor Litvak visited Eddy Covariance flux towers located near the city of Buenos Aires and the city of San Luis. While in San Luis, Dr. Litvak participated in a workshop to discuss ongoing and prospective collaborative projects with leading researchers from the National University of San Luis, the National Research Council (Conicet) and the National Agricultural Agency (INTA). Professor Litvak also presented seminars and co-taught a 2-week intensive graduate course at the School of Agriculture of the University of Buenos Aires.
Professor Litvak’s visit served to improve the capabilities of Argentine research teams. The scholars and professionals that participated in her project are now better prepared to take full advantage of the new techniques and approaches to evaluate the exchange of carbon, water and energy between the land surface and the atmosphere. Improving their understanding of ecosystems responses to local and global changes is crucial to make a better and sustainable use of these valuable natural resources.

Among the paleontology researchers from the University of California, Santa Barbara engaged in collecting new fossil specimens in the Andes range is Daniel Luna, a Fulbright fellow who arrived in Argentina last March and joined this research team quite recently. After working with the team in studying and classifying the remains of these mammals that are extinct today, Daniel feels confident that they will be able to add new species to those discovered by Argentine Naturalist Florentino Ameghino at the turn of the 19th century. More than this, Daniel and his research team led by Drs. Andre Wyss, John Flynn and Darin Croft will be contributing to tracing the evolution of the mammals that inhabited South America when it was an island (ages ago) and to understanding the ancient environments in which they lived.

Some exchanges like the one started by Amelia Arraya (from Jujuy, Argentina) and Martin Van Opdorp (from Reston, Virginia) in 2002 are still vibrantly sound and flourishing. Martin and Amelia have continued and strengthened their professional relationship by feeding their intercultural teaching over the years. The Fulbright Teacher Exchange Program that allowed Martin and Amelia to trade their jobs in Jujuy and Reston was just the starting point of an ongoing bicultural learning process that brought tangible benefits not just to them but to their numerous students in both countries. This year, the two teachers finally revisited their former schools and communities and designed a photo album to reflect their joint collaborative team-teach projects. Take a moment to check out these photos.

Receiving a Fulbright fellowship in 2004 allowed Natasha Keith to spend a year interning at Fundación Instituto Leloir . This was a turning point in Natasha’s life, which led her to seek admission at UC Berkeley for graduate studies in Biochemistry. After years of full dedication to the field, in December, 2010 Natasha finished her PhD in Chemistry (with a specialty in biophysics). Instead of moving on in the traditional industry-or-academia tracks that most chemists explore, she decided to try something different: Science Policy: Natasha received a fellowship from the American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS) that will take her to work for two years at the U.S. State Department. Natasha will be working on subjects related to bio fuels, predominantly in Latin America. “It is a thrill for me to be able to use some of my Latin American experiences (as well as my Spanish), and I continually look back and thank my Fulbright Fellowship for setting me in this direction”, said Natasha recently.
While she was here in Argentina in 2004, Natasha volunteered to travel to Corrientes, a remote city in the Northeast of the country, to talk to undergraduate students about her combined interest in humanities and basic sciences. Many of those students had never been in contact with young Americans, and Natasha’s talk inspired some of them to sharply change their plans and seek an education abroad. We are very grateful to Natasha for being so inspiring to students of Argentina.
